Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece, led by Juliet Walker, has been running since January 2015. The group meets once a month, on the first Wednesday, in Mountford 3 at the Community Centre. Meetings are from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, with a tea break in the middle. A contribution of 50p is made to cover the cost of refreshments and handouts. A reminder email is always sent out a week or so beforehand. So far we have concentrated mainly on sculpture, architecture, mythology and religion, ranging from Classical Greece, back to Minoan and Mycenaean Civilisations. We have also started looking at aspects of life in Ancient Athens. We have been on two trips to London, to see exhibitions at the British Museum. Highlights for late 2016 and early 2017 include a Greek meal at the Sussex Brewery, and a trip to Greece to see the ancient sites.

Art Appreciation
The Group develops an understand and love of art through outside visits to Galleries locally and in London. DVDs are used where explanations are led by Exports in their field. Books and scanned pictures extend resources. Members are encouraged to participate in discussions and on occasions to add a postscript to sessions by giving a talk about an artist/sculptor they admire.

At our monthly meetings we discuss all things astronomical, looking at events in the past, the present and in the future. We also attend relevant public lectures at Portsmouth University and occasionally visit places of astronomical interest

Holiday French Group This new group is aimed at giving confidence to those who are going on holiday in France and would like to practice their French, from booking a table in a restaurant or a room in a hotel to having a conversation with some of the "natives". Under the expert eye of Jeff Thatcher we meet regularly to get photography tips from him, and view and discuss our latest images on the screen (provided by the ECA). Often Jeff suggests a subject or project for us to concentrate on; we then make our own small selection, either images which we consider worth showing or sometimes one that we need advice about. We then put these images on to a memory stick to take to the meeting. We also use Photoshop to edit photos and will also be using Picassa for simpler cropping and editing.

We can accept more members, and you are not bound to make a presentation yourself just because you are a member! But we hope you will one day! Contact Peter Goldfarb ( if you wish to join. Some bring a drink to make the 10/15 minute interval more convivial!
